What is Music Therapy?
Music Therapy is the evidence-based approach, by a certified music therapist, to address non-musical cognitive, social, emotional, speech, language and sensorimotor goals, across a broad spectrum of deficits and disorders, using music as a medium.
In other words, a board certified music therapist is able to address goal areas, tied to specific daily life functions for children with neurodevelopmental disorders. For example, if a child is struggling with social interaction, a music therapist may design a therapeutic music intervention to address the issue and improve their functioning and overall quality of life.
Clients need not be trained or excellent musicians to benefit from treatment, and a large majority of clients have no prior music training.
Music Therapy is research-based, cost-effective and reimbursable through government programs like Medicaid and even insurance in certain instances.
